Preliminary "Techie" feature

As promised in my previous post, here is my preliminary design for "The Code of the Techie" feature that will run on March 5th. I'm sure this spread will change alot.....but here is what I have so far! Comment, please!

  1. I like the theme/concept you went for here Christy. The typography works well too. I think you might want to look for a better background image though. It is a bit too cartoonish. Also, I think the headline gets lost in the green up there. It needs to have more dominance. Great start though. See you tomorrow!

  2. I think the background image works, although I would also agree with Philip that the headline gets lost in the motherboard. I know the editors talked about the use of white text on a black background for the text of the story, and I would suggest just changing the background of those text boxes to white. I don't think you lose the concept of the design by doing that.

  3. do you only have one spread to work with? I thought all features were two spreads... maybe I am making that up, but now that I can see the spread I really like how you incorporated the green from the motherboard on a story about saving some-that was ridiculous, but I like the content driven relationship to the color choice. Maybe there are other ways you could incorporate the motherboard into your design. I like the underscores in the (some of) the subheads. You have a lot of good details you should carry through to your final design!

  4. I think the concept behind your idea is a great one, but I am not sure about having the board by the entire background. Now that I see it on the computer it looks awesome, but when I saw it printed out in lab it didn't look as great on paper. I hate when that happens to me. However, I really enjoy the type you use and the look of newspaper clippings, or articles all over the page.
